Shall I give to God something that costs me nothing?
2 Samuel 24:24
John 12:1-3 AMPC
So six days before the Passover Feast, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had died and whom He had raised from the dead. [2] So they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those at the table with Him. [3] Mary took a pound of ointment of pure liquid nard [a rare perfume] that was very expensive, and she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair. And the whole house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
Mary had such a special relationship with Jesus. In another passage we see her just sitting at Jesus' feet, listening to Him, being close, soaking in His Presence.
Now, just before He is to die on the cross, again she is in tune with Him.
She's not scurrying about serving meals, like Martha. She has listened to Jesus and knows in part what is to come.
She wants to give Him worship fitting for the King of kings.
She wants to show her love in a unique way.
The perfume was costly, and the fragrance filled the house.
This led me to examine my worship of Jesus. How much is it costing me?
How much time do I spend just loving Jesus? Does the "smell" of my worship fill the home?
Sadly, I look at my life recently and the fragrance hasn't been brilliant - lots of moans and groans - not enough love and thanks to my wonderful Lord.
Let me learn from Mary's example and not give to Jesus some cheap vote of thanks and then spread doom and gloom around the home.
