Deuteronomy 8:17-18 AMPC
And beware lest you say in your [mind and] heart, My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth. [18] But you shall [earnestly] remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
There I sat at my desk back in late September 1998.
I had thought to go into business with someone who pulled out at the last minute.
After giving in my notice, I went back, tail between my legs, and asked for my old job back. My boss "graciously" agreed.
A few days had passed undisturbed.
Then it came - a knife-like twisting in my spiritual guts - a strong compunction - that I must leave.
It was such a strong conviction that I had to go see my boss and tell him "I can't stay here!"
He was incredulous and pleaded with me to reconsider.
But God's Hand was heavy upon me and I couldn't relent.
"What will you do?" he asked. I had absolutely no idea, my previous plans were in tatters.
I remember the Holy Spirit giving me the verse above that very morning and I clung to it.
Having subconsciously put my trust in that job (for 22 plus years) for my source of supply, God was challenging me that He alone was to be the Source.
He gives the power to get wealth - not me - not my ability - but He only.
I'm not chirping the "prosperity gospel", but I am stating that Jesus must be the Source of our supply.
We may be rich or poor but we look to the same sustaining Lord for our providence.
Philippians 4:12 AMPC
I know how to be abased and live humbly in straitened circumstances, and I know also how to enjoy plenty and live in abundance. I have learned in any and all circumstances the secret of facing every situation, whether well-fed or going hungry, having a sufficiency and enough to spare or going without and being in want.
That was the lesson that I've had to learn time and time again in my life.
Earthly wealth can be stripped away at any time - but God's provision is eternal.
Psalm 62:5-8,10-11 NKJV
My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. [6] He only is my Rock and my Salvation; He is my Defence; I shall not be moved. [7] In God is my Salvation and my Glory; The Rock of my Strength, And my Refuge, is in God. [8] Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a Refuge for us. Selah [10] Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them. [11] God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God.
