What to do with fear

But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

Psalm 56:3

OK, time for confession, I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat! On my first appointment with my new dentist, I told him that "I'm a state registered coward" and offered to show the yellow streak down my back!

Therefore, how to deal with fear has been a big issue in my life.

This verse above has become a key part of my spiritual & emotional armoury, ready to pull out when fear raises its ugly head in my life!

Like a sharp arrow flying at fear, it always finds its mark.

After going through Storm Katie on a flight back from Israel, including massive turbulence, abortive landing, hearing a lady exclaiming "we're all going to die" - flying became quite a trauma to me.

Take offs, landings, turbulence would all produce that sickening response of fright and panic, not to mention cold, sweaty palms!

This Holy Spirit inspired verse, repeated over and over again in my heart, turned me towards Jesus and His loving protection.

His perfect love did drive out the fear, but I had to be determined to cling to that Word in order to overcome the fear.

The Bible, as the infallible Living Word of God, has so many precious pieces of weaponry, that we need to store away, ready for the Holy Spirit to bring it up at just the right moment for each event in our lives.

That's why daily devotions, time spent reading God's Word, storing it away, in His Presence, are so essential for each believer.

Because Jesus knows what each day is going to bring, He can provide us with exactly what we need to make it through, be it ever so challenging.

Take this precious Psalm and let it be a prayer to put in your spiritual armoury ready to use in times of fear and distress...

Psalm 56:1-11 AMPC

Be merciful and gracious to me, O God, for man would trample me or devour me; all the day long the adversary oppresses me.

They that lie in wait for me would swallow me up or trample me all day long, for they are many who fight against me, O Most High!

What time I am afraid, I will have confidence in and put my trust and reliance in You.

By [the help of] God I will praise His word; on God I lean, rely, and confidently put my trust; I will not fear. What can man, who is flesh, do to me?

All day long they twist my words and trouble my affairs; all their thoughts are against me for evil and my hurt. They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they watch my steps, even as they have [expectantly] waited for my life.

They think to escape with iniquity, and shall they? In Your indignation bring down the peoples, O God.

You number and record my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle - are they not in Your book?

Then shall my enemies turn back in the day that I cry out; this I know, for God is for me.

In God, Whose word I praise, in the Lord, Whose word I praise, In God have I put my trust and confident reliance; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
