Matthew 13:16-17 NKJV
But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; [17] for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
As we get older often physical hearing and eyesight begin to deteriorate.
Many times I have to repeat something that someone has said to my nearest and dearest because he can't properly hear or understand what they are saying (let alone that English is not his mother tongue).
For instance, yesterday when a lady was petting our exuberant puppy, she asked him: "What is the puppy's name?" I had to intervene and repeat the question in a voice he understood.
I do realise what a blessing it is to still have my physical hearing in tact, when he struggles to hear certain sounds and word endings. Often he will interpret those sounds as something totally opposite to what is being said!
So it is with spiritual deafness - the Gospel of Jesus is incomprehensible - it just doesn't compute.
1 Corinthians 1:18 NKJV
For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Paul realises that he needs holy boldness to proclaim the mystery of the message of the Cross:
Ephesians 6:19 NKJV
...pray for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel...
Much like I have to speak slowly, distinctly and in a raised voice to help my nearest and dearest hear some physical sound, so we need to ask for that holy boldness and clarity to speak about our faith in Jesus.
People are so desperately in need of Jesus' intervention in their lives - especially in these the evil last days.
Yes, be blessed in your ability to hear and understand Jesus, but, with a heart of love, share that mysterious message so that others can hear Him too.
Lord, may I be that mouthpiece which unravels the mystery of the Gospel in the power of Your Holy Spirit.
