Watch what I watch!

Proverbs 15:14

A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash.

Growing up, in the 1960's, we only had a couple of black & white channels on TV. So choice of what to watch was very restricted. Reading a book meant going to a shop or library to choose what to read.

Nowadays the options are endless and immediate - digital streams galore, DVDs, whole libraries of books ready for download.

The question is: what do I "feed" on? Because what I choose to watch or read will have a great bearing on my internal spiritual, mental & emotional health.

An interesting exercise is to take a quick survey of the past week. What filled my mind the most? What did I "feed" my soul?

Let me heed Jesus' advice and warning:

The Lamp of the Body

Luke 11:33-36 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Jesus puts the onus on me to choose to fill my life with light.

That means switching channels when I discern that the material is "trash" and detrimental to my soul.

These are days of darkness and deception, particularly from the media. I need to be in good shape mentally, emotionally & spiritually. So if anything is spoiling that, it needs to be rejected.

Is it what Jesus meant when He said:

Matthew 18:9

And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

Prayer

Father God, please help me to choose wisely what goes into my imagination. Help me to filter out the trash, so that I can walk in the light.

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

1 John 1:5-7 This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
