Walking in darkness

Isaiah 9:2 AMPC

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great Light; those who dwelt in the land of intense darkness and the shadow of death, upon them has the Light shined.

Let's start with an incident which illustrates what I reckon God wants to show us today....

[Hope my nearest and dearest doesn't mind!]

Finding our way to the loo in the darkness of night, is a bit of an assault course. Our dog has a number of places that he sleeps and often blocks the way.

Last night I woke to find said nearest and dearest fumbling around near the wardrobe - he'd gotten confused and lost his way to the bathroom trying to avoid tripping over the dog!

I switched the bedside light on and immediately he was aware of where he was and he'd gone wrong! In the light he found his way to the intended destination.

Darkness is very deceptive. It can delude us into making bad decisions, wrong friendships and choosing diverting paths.

There's so much going on in the "darkness" of these evil days that we need the Light of the World - Jesus - to constantly shine on our pathway.

John 1:5

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Following Jesus means following the Light. He shows us where we've wandered off and become lost in our lives. In Him we can see clearly what things are of true value in life and the actions that are plainly bad.

We, as followers of Jesus, are also called to be light-bearers. Much like me switching on the light for my nearest and dearest - spiritually, we're called to do that for others who are lost in the darkness of this world.

John 8:12

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

However, not everyone will want the light switched on! For some, darkness has a great appeal. It covers up their deeds of destruction.

John 3:19

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

Question

Do you really want God to switch the light on or would you rather walk on in darkness?
