Matthew 28:19 AMPC
Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
Amazing conversations, bring up topics I have taken for granted!
The Trinity of the Godhead is one of these issues.
Great theologians have written on this matter and still it is a marvellous mystery, but one that can be proved in scripture.
Firstly, the Holy Spirit is mentioned in Genesis 1:2
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters..
Then when man was created we read a plurality of the Godhead:
Genesis 1:26 And God said, 'Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. '
So the earliest accounts describe a conversation in the Godhead!
At Jesus' baptism we see the Presence of the Trinity - God the Father speaking, God the Spirit descending as a dove on God the Son:
16 As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’
How can Jesus be God - this is another question often asked.
Well, He said so - that's the ultimate reason He was sentenced to death:
Matthew 26
The high priest said to him, ‘I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God. 64 ‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied. ‘But I say to all of you: from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.’
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think? ‘He is worthy of death,’ they answered.
In John 10:30 Jesus says "I and the Father are One", making Himself equal with God!
Not just a teacher or preacher or even a prophet - Jesus declared that He is God - verified by the voice of God the Father and the descent of the Holy Spirit.
The ultimate verification of His deity - His Resurrection and Ascension to the right hand of God the Father.
In the end, all this will seem "stuff and nonsense" to you unless God the Holy Spirit reveals the truth of it.
Because trying to comprehend the Godhead is like a mouse trying to understand electricity!
It's beyond our mortal minds - too awesome to fathom.
Let's end with this today:
Phillippians 2
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death –
even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
