Total recall

2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.

It's natural to get offended when we are not believed, especially by those close to us.

I have a real soft spot for the buddleia in our garden. I love the way their branches droop and sway, enticing the butterflies and bees to come and feed on the nectar.

But to my better half they are an unkempt nuisance, and he would love to cut them back, in order to be able to see the fox cubs more clearly.

So yesterday, when dead heading the flowers, I saw a branch in the garden bin, I accused him saying: "Have you been cutting the buddleia?"

He was hurt and replied:

"That's very bad that you don't trust me. I promised I wouldn't touch them and now you doubt me"!

I held my hands up: "Guilty, as charged"!

God, too, gets hurt when we doubt his promises to us.

Back on 17th March this year the Lord gave me His promise about COVID-19: "It shall not come near you!"

Psalm 91:7

It was such a distinct voice and promise (as I washed my hands in the bathroom) that each time I'm tempted to fear, I recall it and hold onto it.

Again, said better half looked incredulously at me when I reiterated this promise yesterday.

I've learned by now that God never lies, what he promises, he delivers!

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.

Does he speak and then not act?  Does he promise and not fulfil?

Numbers 23:19

Now does this promise mean that I should act irresponsibly around the virus? No, but it means that the Lord's protection is with me and will keep me safe as I go about my life.

Let me encourage you to recall specific promises that God has given you personally and hold on to them no matter what. Even when circumstances seem to belie them - wait and see - God is faithful!

Then you will say with the Psalmist:

What, what would have become of me had I not believed that I would see the Lord's goodness in the land of the living!

Wait and hope for and expect the Lord; be brave and of good courage and let your heart be stout and enduring. Yes, wait for and hope for and expect the Lord.

Psalm 27:13-14

It's a very bleak world when we forget God's promises in His Word.
