Isaiah 40:6-8
A voice says, “Cry out.”
And I said, “What shall I cry?”
“All people are like grass,
and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.
The grass withers and the flowers fall,
because the breath of the Lord blows on them.
Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever.”
We had a garden party on Saturday and the lawn looked pristine and green - especially with the intermittent showers of rain watering it.
However, there were several swarms of flying ants in various patches.
My lovely friend busied herself, boiling kettles of water to pour on the swarms to get rid of them.
The next day, to our dismay, we had patches of dead grass all over the lawn!
That's how transitory the grass and flowers are and God compares these to the fleetingness of our own lives: "All people are like grass"...
Indeed, looking back on my own life, I wonder where on earth the time has gone. It seems to have flown by so very quickly.
The one solid foundation of life, however, is the Word of the Lord - it endures forever!
John's gospel starts with "In the beginning was the Word... John 1:1" ".. the Word became flesh and dwelt among us John 1:14"... So we see that Jesus is the Living Word of God and He lasts forever!
Anchoring ourselves to Him means having a share in His eternal life.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
If you feel like you're withering, look up, be encouraged, Jesus came so that you can go on to eternal life.
