Isaiah 40:5 NKJV
The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
Only very few people have ever seen the glory of God.
It has been an exclusive "club" of very special characters in the Bible.
It is such a stunning phenomena that those that have seen it have experienced fearful awe.
There's something in our fallen nature which is afraid in the Presence of the full glory of God.
When Adam and Eve walked and talked with God in the Garden of Eden it was an easy open relationship.
Yet, after the Fall, they hid from Him and made fig leaves to cover their nakedness.
That face to face communion was lost.
Moses craved a sight of God's glory, he was so close to the Lord:
Exodus 33:18,22-23 NKJV
And he said, "Please, show me Your glory." [22] So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. [23] Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen."
Peter, James and John were permitted the privilege of seeing God's glory in Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration:
Matthew 17:1-3 NKJV
Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; [2] and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. [3] And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.
Now we, who believe, in some sense, have "seen" the face of God in Christ Jesus.
Yet one day, ALL flesh shall see this most awesome glory.
For the redeemed it will be stunning, inspiring awesome worship, for the unbelieving it will be the most shocking, fearful experience.
Imagine being confronted by some One you have ignored, mocked and abused!
There is nowhere to hide from the Lord.
