The blame game

Genesis 3:11-13 AMPC

And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat? [12] And the man said, The woman whom You gave to be with me-she gave me [fruit] from the tree, and I ate. [13] And the Lord God said to the woman, What is this you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled (cheated, outwitted, and deceived) me, and I ate.

The desire to "pass the buck" and not take responsibility for our sins and rebellion against God is as old as the Garden of Eden.

We do so love to exonerate ourselves of any blame and pass it onto others, don't we?

Here, in this recount of "The Fall", we see the pattern of our own attempts to prove our innocence.

Adam blames Eve and even hints that it's God's fault too - "the woman who YOU gave me".

Eve passes the blame onto the Serpent - "he deceived me and I ate".

In reality, neither Adam nor Eve were willing to face their guilt head on.

Perhaps if they had immediately admitted their deliberate disobedience and not tried to cover it up, hiding from God - it would have been different?

We will never know.

Today, nothing has changed - the headlines are dominated by a privileged pair trying to blame their families, upbringings and cultures for the damage to their mental health.

They try to prove their 'truth" and their honesty-driven motives compared with their cold hearted "enemies"!

It is rather ugly.

In reality, we are all so very guilty before a Holy God.

It is futile to try and prove our innocence and blame others or circumstances:

Romans 3:23 AMPC

Since all have sinned and are falling short of the honour and glory which God bestows and receives.

Once we stop and face facts that we HAVE failed, we HAVE broken God's laws then we can move from condemnation to salvation:

Romans 6:23 AMPC

For the wages which sin pays is death, but the [bountiful] free gift of God is eternal life through (in union with) Jesus Christ our Lord.

Father God, please help me to stop playing the blame game and take full responsibility for my sin, bringing it to the Cross of Jesus for complete forgiveness.
