Staying on the King's road

Numbers 20:17

Please let us travel through your land. We will be careful not to go through your fields and vineyards. We won’t even drink water from your wells. We will stay on the king’s road and never leave it until we have passed through your territory.”

This was the Israelites plea to the Edomites as they made their way through the wilderness.

It was a verse that jumped out at me this morning as I read the portion of the Bible in one year.

They urged the Edomites to let them pass through on their way to the Promised Land. They vowed that they wouldn't hurt anything or anyone as they travelled through. Yet the Edomites remained their aggressors and blocked their path.

I thought how it applies to our journeying through this life with King Jesus.

We do err greatly when we expect "come to Jesus and the road will be smooth and straightforward".

How easy it is to stray off into "enemy" territory and be distracted by the demanding issues of the world!

We can leave the King's road when the enemy puts road blocks and diversions in our way. Giving in to situational ethics because it's less controversial and doesn't affect our popularity or safety.

Jesus said that the road to destruction is wide and full of fellow travellers.

The Narrow and Wide Gates

Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

None of us like a lonely road! Yet the fact is, in order to stay on the King's road, often you will find yourself on a solitary journey.

Things like speaking up for the unborn, or traditional marriage - won't buy you many friends and will even find volatile opposition.

However, you plus the Living God are a winning team.

Stay on the King's road!

1 Corinthians 15:57

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
