Stay alert

Matthew 24:37-42

37 “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 38 In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. 39 People didn’t realise what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.

40 “Two men will be working together in the field; one will be taken, the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding flour at the mill; one will be taken, the other left.

42 “So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. 43 Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into. 44 You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.

The new government slogan for this COVID-19 crisis is "Stay Alert" - how up to date is Jesus! He's calling on His followers to keep watch, be on guard, stay alert!

Very often, when I'm on my own in the house, I will go to the front and back door several times to make sure the doors are locked before going to bed.

The idea of someone coming in at dead of night, taking me by surprise, while I'm asleep is scary!

In the passage today, Jesus uses this illustration about a thief breaking in and catching the owner unawares.

Jesus tells us to make our lives secure in Him so we are not taken unawares by His Return.

So many are talking of "End Times" at the moment and rightly so.

As believers it is good to look intently at what Jesus says about the time of His Return.

Don't get taken unawares, be ready - whatever your Biblical stance - expect His arrival at any moment.

Keep short accounts: get rid of unforgiveness, bitterness and hatred.

Don't get robbed of your own salvation.

Fan the flames of love in your life, for it's written that there will be an outbreak of "cold love":

Matthew 24:12 NLT

Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.

Hold on to love, for we are told that love is an everlasting force that will never fail!
