Stand Still!

Exodus 14:13-14

Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.

The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest.

There are those movies that have you hanging on the edge of your seats, usually there is some sort of chase going on - a powerful enemy is pursuing the hero, it seems there's no way out...

Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Mission Impossible all have these scenarios.

Here in Exodus we find Moses faced with his own "mission impossible"!

Stuck, leading the Israelites out of Egypt, with Pharaoh's great army on their heels and nothing but the barrier of the sea before them.

The crowd started crying out in fear, "surely we shouldn't have followed you, Moses - we should've stayed where we were rather than die in the wilderness."

What was Moses' response? Run for the hills? Every man for himself?

No, he told them to stand still and watch God fight on their behalf.

With the sound of the chariots charging and the noise of horses' hooves echoing off the stark, rocky terrain, Moses told them: "God is going to fight for you. You're going be at peace in what looks like a hopeless situation."

Strong words, Mo! Strong faith from a guy who, years past, had taken the coward's way out, by running away from Egypt after killing an Egyptian guard.

Circumstances since had pummelled his soul through his various encounters with the Lord:

* a Voice from a burning bush,

* Miracles of the 10 plagues,

* The Passover

All this built up Mo's faith in the Lord.

The result was he could stare down the barrel of impossible situations, confident in God's provision and protection. He knew that God could "Do it again"!

Going back to those action movie heroes, they always escape at the very last minute. It's suspenseful and spine tingling.

So with our own lives, God often takes us to the very brink of failure, stretching our faith beyond its natural limit: taking us to where only the supernatural will do!

The acid test is: can I stand still and hold my peace and watch God work?
