Luke 2:10-14 NKJV
Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. [11] For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. [12] And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger." [13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: [14] "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"
I watched a trailer for the remake of Superman due out in 2025.
The tale of some superhuman coming to rescue the world is a compelling one.
It appeals to our imagination to have some hero swooping down to rescue us from some deadly peril.
Then cast your minds back to those shepherds on a dark night, in an obscure field with their sheep. They weren't expecting anything. Life was hard and humdrum, scraping out a meagre living under the rule of the tyrannical Romans.
Then "suddenly" normality was ripped apart by the angels...
This is no fairytale, this is solid reality.
Fellow Christians, whatever your circumstances this morning, we are truly the only people who have something to celebrate this Christmas - it's the same message that the angels brought to the shepherds:
The Saviour we all need is born, is even now resurrectedly, eternally alive.
He brings real peace to each believing heart and His goodwill draws us close with open arms of love.
Love is in short supply - just look around at sad and lonely people, the homeless, the jobless, the unwanted - looking for some hope, some light at the end of the dark tunnel of life.
We can bring that into people's lives - look around at who's next to you - God has placed you right there.
Time to share that God isn't angry, but He reaches out with the same goodwill that the angels announced so long ago.
Be the Lord's messenger of love - share the gift that Jesus has given.
