Psalm 51:1-4 NKJV
Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. [2] Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. [3] For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. [4] Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight- That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
This was David's prayer after he had committed adultery with Bathsheba, made her pregnant and then had her husband, Uriah killed on the battlefield so he could take her as his wife - see 2 Samuel 11.
He had managed to excuse himself until Nathan the prophet confronted him in the power of the Holy Spirit - 2 Samuel 12.
It's easy to drift along, excusing my own wrong actions and motives, thinking everyone else is the problem.
I only come to a full stop when I see the real me in the mirror of God's Word and it's not a pretty sight!
The Holy Spirit's role is to reveal the Truth about my lost state and point me to the only way to be made right before a Holy God - via the Cross of Jesus.
What do I see when I survey the wondrous Cross on which the Prince of Glory died?
Do I see my own wrongs being punished, my own hurts and sorrows being carried, my own diseases being bourne, as He writhed in agony, struggling for each painful breath?
Yes, I see my only hope of being cleansed and made anew. I see the dawn of new birth.
Isaiah 53:10-11 NKJV
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. [11] He shall see the labour of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.
Precious Lord Jesus, You are my only Hope. You have paid my debt in full and paved the way for me to be saved and made brand new. I will thank you into eternity of eternities.
