Recognising

Luke 24:13-16 AMPC

And behold, that very day two of [the disciples] were going to a village called Emmaus, [which is] about seven miles from Jerusalem. [14] And they were talking with each other about all these things that had occurred. [15] And while they were conversing and discussing together, Jesus Himself caught up with them and was already accompanying them. [16] But their eyes were held, so that they did not recognise Him.

There's a lot to learn in this passage.

Firstly, it's awesome to realise that Jesus is listening to our conversations. Even if we don't recognise it, He draws near.

I ask myself this morning: "how much have my conversations taken His Presence into account?!"

These disciples were extremely disappointed and disillusioned because they had expected Jesus to throw out the Romans and take over as King.

Instead they'd seen the very opposite happen. Jesus was arrested by their own religious leaders and executed by the Roman government.

So they'd lost their faith.

Even though they'd heard that Jesus was alive, they were so down, they weren't able to receive the good news.

What did Jesus do?

Interestingly He never said: "Here I am - don't you see it's Me, I'm alive... " No, He actually gives them a Bible study. He goes through the scriptures and explains the events that had happened through the Word of God.

He made it crystal clear that He HAD to suffer in order to bring salvation.

In times of disappointment it's essential to be familiar with what God has to say in His Word.

It's in the Word that we see things as they really are.

Reading God's Word and being familiar with it will help us recognise Jesus in our every day lives.

Lord please open my eyes to recognise Jesus in the events that are difficult and disappointing. Help me to find You as I read the Word daily.

Luke 24:32 AMPC

And they said to one another, Were not our hearts greatly moved and burning within us while He was talking with us on the road and as He opened and explained to us [the sense of] the Scriptures?
