Psalm 61:1-4 NLT
O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! [2] From the ends of the earth, I cry to You for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the Towering Rock of Safety, [3] for You are my Safe Refuge, a Fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. [4] Let me live forever in Your Sanctuary, safe beneath the Shelter of Your Wings! Interlude
"A bruised reed You will not break
A smouldering candle You won't snuff out
Your Gentleness has made me great
And I will live in the Shadow of Your Wings"
So says the song, echoing Isaiah 42 and Psalm 18.
This is the Jesus who sees our overwhelmed soul, too troubled but to cry out "help me"!
Be it from the ends of the Earth or the end of our self, there comes that point we all face - utter helplessness before overwhelming circumstances....
The Bible points to the only True Help we can find, wherever we find our self.
The gentleness of the Saviour, who bends down to listen to the cry of the desperate, is still available to everyone who calls out to Him.
No God doesn't have literal wings, but the "wings" signify the over arching protection that He loving extends to those who choose to seek His Help and Presence.
I've been to Gibraltar and stood at the top of that towering rock, strewn with drifting, whispy clouds. Looking down from there, everything and everyone looks tiny in comparison.
It put me in mind of this Psalm - the Towering Rock of Safety - that is the Lord we serve.
I may get overwhelmed but God isn't, not ever!
Dear overwhelmed soul, be encouraged - call on the only One who is the Source of True Help.
Selah
