Luke 10:42 NLT
There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.
Cares, worries, things to do, plans to make - there are so many things that line up to distract and take our attention. Whether it's the middle of the night, early morning or any time of day, it's so hard to make time for the "one thing" that Jesus is speaking of.
We have choices to make amid the hustle and bustle of daily life. What will be our focus?
In Psalm 27:4 David shows his focal point:
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple.
Obviously David didn't stay in the Temple all the time and neither can we be at church continually (especially in this lock-down).
Yet we can, in the temple of our hearts, let Jesus dwell richly and be our focus, our "one thing" if you like!
Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Sometimes that verse has seemed a bit "unnatural" to me, too hyper-spiritual. However, I believe we can be, as Mike Pilavachi puts it, "naturally supernatural". We are part of this earthly life sharing the joys and sorrows of being human. We mustn't try to be something we're not - that would be false. Yet letting Jesus sit in the centre of our soul we will naturally and gradually find our equilibrium in Him.
I've got a new camera that I'm still getting used to and sometimes, inexplicably, it loses focus. Although I'm pointing in the right direction, I can't see clearly! But, if I wait long enough, the auto-focus will take over.
Sometimes we need, like Mary, to wait at the feet of Jesus and life will come into focus.
Let Him be your "One Thing"!!
Don't be like the rich young ruler in Luke 18:18-23
18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honour your father and mother.’
21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.
22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.
