Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Psalm 63:1 NLT
O God, You are my God; I earnestly search for You. My soul thirsts for You; my whole body longs for You in this parched and weary land where there is no water.
Why is there no spiritual thirst in human hearts? Are we too comfortable in our daily lives - preoccupied with the mundane and superficial issues?
Can I honestly say that I'm thirsty for more of Jesus? ....to know Him better...to seek Him earnestly?
To God, each one of us is an open book - no secrets are hidden from His all-pervading eyes.
We see this so clearly in the way He dealt with people in the Gospel accounts.
Because He knows the thoughts and desires of each heart, He took time to go to the woman at the well (who everyone avoided); to stop and see Zaccheus (the notorious local tax collector) hidden up the sycamore tree; to discern the desperate touch of a woman amidst a crowd.
All these, in their own way, were spiritually thirsty people, desiring something more out of life.
God is looking for "desperate" individuals who realise that they need something outside of themselves and know that help of ordinary humanity is in vain:
Psalm 60:11 AMPC
O give us help against the adversary, for vain (ineffectual and to no purpose) is the help or salvation of man.
Do I secretly think I need nothing, that I'm alright as I am?
Perhaps that's the worst state of all?
Revelation 3:17 AMPC
For you say, I am rich; I have prospered and grown wealthy, and I am in need of nothing; and you do not realize and understand that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
O Lord, please, in Your mercy, wake us up to to see the secrets of our own hearts and realise how wretched poor and blind we are without You.
There's so much awaiting the thirsty soul:
Isaiah 55:1-3 NKJV
"Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price. [2] Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance. [3] Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you- The sure mercies of David.
