Psalm 121
Mountains
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
So here I am in the early morning looking out at the hills once again.
The soft rain is falling on the parched ground refreshing everything.
This wonderful Psalm sprung to my mind, but in a new way.
When surrounded by mountains, or even smaller hills of troubles in life - who do I go to?
Where is my gaze?
Do I stare at those troubles and let gloom descend.
Do I look first in various places, any new trend, medication or the latest fad of self help?
David, in this Psalm, is reminding himself of where to look for proper help - the Source of all help.
Why? Why is the Lord the best source of help?
Answer: He is the great Creator - He formed each one of us, He made the mountains and the valleys. He threw the stars into space and maintains it all by the Word of His Power.
Hebrews 1:2
But now in these days he has spoken to us through his Son to whom he has given everything and through whom he made the world and everything there is.
When the car breaks down, you don't go to the butcher's, no, you go to the car mechanic!
So many folk are looking for help in the wrong place.
Let our gaze be first of all towards our Lord Jesus.
He knows the end from the beginning and is watching over our lives every single moment.
He doesn't go for an afternoon kip, or doze off while we're speaking to Him.
He is our ever available Source.
What a comfort to know we have a precious promise that:
The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Psalm 121:7-8
The Mountain Maker is also the Mountain Mover!
