1 Corinthians 13:8 -13
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
We live in a world where we don't know everything.
Sad and bad things happen, arbitrarily, to us and to people around the globe. It's been this way since the Fall of mankind.
Right now, images are emblazoned on our screens of terrible suffering happening indiscriminately - those caught up in war killed and injured, on the run for their lives - who have nothing to do with the political conflicts.
Those of us who love the Lord Jesus often are left without any answers "we know in part" as the word says.
One thing that I have learned is that we should never be afraid to say "I don't understand" when sad and bad things happen to us, to our loved ones or innocent people.
Today is the anniversary of the passing of my best friend's husband. He died suddenly, unexpectedly, out of the blue.
It left my friend bereft and heartbroken. She will never quite get over it. Yet she hasn't dumped her faith in Jesus. She still maintains her course because "Love Never Fails"!
Because we love Jesus, we can hold His Hand when the way is hidden from our sight.
We hope on against hope and believe on when circumstances defy our faith.
Corrie Ten Boom said "there is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still". She endured the Ravensbruck concentration camp and witnessed suffering too terrible for words.
For her and for us Love [God's eternal love] is what never fails.
When you have missing pieces in your faith - hold onto love and hope against hope.
