Miracles not mirages

Isaiah 35:5 AMPC

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.

This prophecy focuses on Israel, God's first covenanted people. The Lord pronounces them blind and deaf, when they should know better:

Isaiah 42:19 AMPC

Who is blind but My servant [Israel]? Or deaf like My messenger whom I send? Who is blind like the one who is at peace with Me [who has been admitted to covenant relationship with Me]? Yes, who is blind like the Lord's servant?

The heartbreak and frustration of God the Father overflows, as He expresses His disappointment over His people's failure to understand His purposes.

Even when Jesus arrived on the scene, those who should have welcomed Him, those who knew the scriptures, failed to recognise Him.

Yet for the poor and oppressed, He brought miracles, just as was prophesised:

Isaiah 61

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,

Because the Lord has anointed Me

To preach good tidings to the poor;

He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives,

And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,

And the day of vengeance of our God;

To comfort all who mourn,

3 To console those who mourn in Zion,

To give them beauty for ashes,

The oil of joy for mourning,

The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;

That they may be called trees of righteousness,

The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

When the Lord shows up, in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, stalemate situations and people that have been blind and deaf to the Gospel suddenly are transformed.

Sometimes people travelling through a desert "see" a pool of water in the distance and hurry towards it, only to find it was a mirage - something imaginary - wishful thinking.

Many are pursuing "mirages" [of success, money, fame etc etc] even today, and end up disappointed as there is no pot of gold at the end of those rainbows.

But there's nothing imaginary about the miracles of Jesus.

When He walked the earth the blind and the deaf were healed, fulfilling the prophecy [see Luke 4].

Still today there are many miraculous healings in Jesus' name.

But the greatest "healing" of all is to recognise and accept Jesus as the Messiah and be given spiritual eyesight and hearing.

May I, as a follower of Jesus, be watchful that I am not found blind and deaf to God's will and purposes.
