Lonely

Lonely

Psalm 102:7

I lie awake;

I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop.

I had already written the word for today and sat outside having breakfast. As we chatted I was wondering whether I had heard right from Jesus.

Then I noticed a chirp-chirp from above - well, God sent just such a bird on the roof waiting to be photographed!

Have you ever watched a bird when it has lost its mate or its "baby"? What a sad picture it paints. Wandering to and fro, looking here and there, never settling for long. Who knows the sadness and bewilderment it is going through in its heart of hearts?

So too the person writing this Psalm is feeling lonely because of what is overwhelming him!

Often our troubles can make us feel separated from human company and even God's Presence - let alone we are being forced to isolate at home by the Government right now!

The Psalmist doesn't suppress his feelings and pretend that everything is fine. No, he pours out his complaint to the One Source of real help: God. Like the sparrow that keeps on chirping mournfully, he is looking for support and solace.

There have been times in my own life when I've felt exactly like that lonely bird, seemingly deserted by those I loved and bombarded by difficult circumstances.

Like the Psalmist, I have poured out my heart to Jesus, and found the strength to get by one day or even one hour at a time.

When I've finished telling God how I feel, opening up, then I've found faith can start to arise.

As gloomy and hopeless as it looks, you can be sure help IS on the way if you've prayed.

Verse 17 says:

He will listen to the prayers of the destitute.

He will not reject their pleas.

If you are feeling like that little sparrow, please know, you have not been deserted, and, you are included in this prayer:

Father, in Jesus' name, today I pray that all those who are feeling lonely and overwhelmed will turn in their despair to You, the True Source of help and comfort. Help me to be there for the lonely people I know. Give me a heart that cares, shares & understands.
