John 14:1 AMPC
Do not let your hearts be troubled (distressed, agitated). You believe in and adhere to and trust in and rely on God; believe in and adhere to and trust in and rely also on Me.
There are all sorts of ways our hearts can troubled - physically, spiritually and emotionally - a veritable trinity of turmoil.
What a shame that the verse above is usually reserved for funerals!
This morning, after a bad night of disturbed sleep, this verse came to me audibly.
"Let not your heart be troubled"...
This is not some nebulous command to pull yourself together, NO, there's a reason, a very good one.
Belief - belief in God - belief in Jesus.
Belief in His Promise of what's in store up ahead in eternity.
When people were enslaved in dreadful & demeaning conditions on the plantations, what sustained them was Jesus' promise of eternal life.
They sang songs of hope in their slavery, knowing that they were free in Jesus. All the while looking for the promise.
Songs like "Swing low sweet chariot", "Michael row the boat ashore" all reflect an eternal Hope when earthly life holds nothing but despair!
The gentle urging of Jesus to "not let our hearts be troubled" was responded to by these songs.
However you choose to keep from being afraid or upset, focus on your belief and trust in Jesus.
He will never let you down.
He may even give you a new song or two to sing!!
