Laughter can conceal a heavy heart, but when the laughter ends, the grief remains.
Proverbs 14:13
Well, we all love to laugh, don't we? But laughter and joy are not synonymous!
Often people who make us laugh the most are plagued with self doubt and loathing.
Some famous comedians were like that: Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Tony Hancock & Tommy Cooper, the list goes on.
My beloved "A.B." (short for Aunty Beatie) made everyone she met laugh, I do mean EVERYONE. Yet she told me one day, in a rare serious moment: "I wouldn't want to have a day of my life again"!
How true is that Proverb which we started with.
We need something more than the "crackle" of laughter to give life meaning and solace in the midst of grief:
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
John 1:4-5
Jesus shines through our darkest moments. No matter how hard life becomes there is some deep sense of belonging and meaning emanating from Him into our heart that overcomes the sadness that we experience.
Laughter is only a transitory sticking plaster often masking a broken heart.
The light, love and hope that Jesus brings is healing and comfort when we most need it, and, will last forever!
