Psalm 14:1-3 NLT
Only fools say in their hearts, "There is no God." They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good! [2] The LORD looks down from Heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. [3] But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one!
Yesterday, at the Remembrance gathering around the War Memorial in Hythe, the celebrant proudly proclaimed that she was a humanist and was chosen to lead to reflect the diversity and inclusion of society!
She then went on to explain what a humanist believes - first and foremost there is no God and that our duty is to be kind and do the best we can while we are alive.
It all sounds so very innocent and thrusts God into the annuals of primitive history.
I wondered how those guys who had given their lives in WW1 & WW2 would feel about it?
Most of all I wondered how the Lord must feel about it. There the vicar, who is meant to represent the Christian faith, stood subservient and apologetic beside someone who is proud of their faith in nothing!
Compare this with Paul:
Romans 1:16-17 NLT
For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes-the Jew first and also the Gentile. [17] This Good News tells us how God makes us right in His sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life."
Was this vicar ashamed of the Gospel? I have no idea, but to put Jesus into the background on the same level as humanism was a slap in the face to Him.
So it was not a surprise that there was no power present at this gathering - hymns were weakly sung and prayers were mouthed while most folk were disinterested.
Truly, it was an insult to the departed soldiers and to most of all to Jesus who gave Himself up for us.
Lord have mercy on this once great land.
