Proverbs 18:11
The rich think of their wealth as a strong defence; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety.
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.
Towers have been built throughout history as a place of refuge to run into when an enemy is on the attack.
Where we choose to place our trust, becomes a tower in our lives.
There was a horrendous story in the news recently of a young guy who "sacrificed" his sisters after making a pact with a demon to win the lottery. The demon didn't keep his side of the agreement! He now faces a lifetime in jail. The failed lottery tickets that were found wrapped in the agreement were a tragic addendum to this sorry tale.
This is an extreme case of how people chase riches, thinking it will solve all their problems.
Yet all the money in the world can't keep you alive forever or prevent disaster striking in one form or another. It is a leaning tower, ready to collapse in hard times.
The only place of real safety is in Jesus. He is the only One who has gone through the "curtain" of death and returned victorious.
Paul, the apostle, met Him on the road to Damascus, after being violently opposed to Him.
He then spent the rest of his life proclaiming the good news of eternal life in Jesus.
He writes:
1 Corinthians 15:19 -28
If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the first fruits; then, when He comes, those who belong to Him. Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For He “has put everything under His feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under Him, it is clear that this does not include God Himself, who put everything under Christ. When He has done this, then the Son Himself will be made subject to Him who put everything under Him, so that God may be all in all.
If you are a young person reading this, eternal life seems nothing to worry about and death appears to be faraway. To you, this life is what matters - the here and now. Yet, where you will spend eternity, is the most crucial issue you will ever have to deal with.
Those of us whose best years are behind us realise the futility of trusting in riches. Rather we long for restored physical health & abilities.
Running to the strong tower of the Lord is a place of safety and a promise of a new immortal body in which to enjoy it.🤗
How safe are you?
