Isaiah 40:6-8 NKJV
The voice said, "Cry out!" And he said, "What shall I cry?" "All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. [7] The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the LORD blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. [8] The grass withers, the flower fades, But the Word of our God stands forever."
I'm looking at our garden, it's summertime and all the plants are in full bloom, the various grasses look invincible as if they'll last forever.
So many different colours, shapes and sizes adorn these flowers and all have varying lifespans - some need a lot of watering, others thrive with little attention.
Doesn't it remind you of the passage above? As humans, we're so different - each one is uniquely created - there are no duplicates, not even twins are exactly the same.
One thing is sure though, like the grass and flowers, we all will fade. Those who are vibrant and tall now will succumb to the "march of time".
We're destined to be finite even if we live to a ripe old age.
What lasts forever then? Is anything eternal?
As Isaiah says "the Word of our God stands forever"....
Jesus is the Word made flesh... He is Eternal - The Alpha and Omega .. as He declared in Revelation:
Revelation 1:8 NKJV
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."
Hooked in to Jesus we can be assured that we have eternal salvation, eternal life and eternal love and belonging.
To my fellow "fading flowers of God's grace" I say: "look up for our redemption draws near":
Revelation 1:7 NKJV
Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
Why will there be mourning when Jesus returns? Surely it's a wonderful thing, isn't it?
Probably it's because instinctively they know that they willfully ignored and made light of His Sacrifice.
Now is the time to take Him seriously...
