Psalm 24:1-2 NKJV
The earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. [2] For He has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters.
Understanding who owns something or someone shapes our behaviour.
This Psalm addresses loud and clear to whom this world belongs.
We are just tenants living here on a temporary lease, mere stewards, not owners.
God Almighty is the Landlord, He has the title deeds.
Yet many totally ignore Him, thinking they can "trash the place" and do just as their arrogant hearts dictate.
So what happens between a tenant and a landlord when the lease expires?
The tenant must meet that landlord who inspects the premises - and the tenant must make good any damage done and restore any alterations made to its original state.
That is an awesome responsibility and, of ourselves, an impossible challenge before a Holy God.
Jesus taught in many parables to illustrate what will happen, when He, as the Landlord takes account(see Luke 20 :9 onwards).
No one has "clean hands and a pure heart" - ask yourself honestly - do you? I know I don't!
There is only One who is worthy to stand as the Psalm foretells:
Psalm 24:3-4 AMPC
Who shall go up into the mountain of the Lord? Or who shall stand in His Holy Place? [4] He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted himself up to falsehood or to what is false, nor sworn deceitfully.
Jesus fits that bill perfectly.
He alone reigns in the Place of Absolute Power - having purchased our Salvation.
Hebrews 1:3 NKJV
who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the Right Hand of the Majesty on High
Now He is about to return, and those gates, long blocked, in Jerusalem, will lift up and the King of Glory will come in:
Psalm 24:7 NKJV
Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.
On this Shabbat morning reflect on this precious Psalm and look forward to that Day when Jesus returns.
