Hebrews 6:16-20 NLT
Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. [17] God also bound Himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that He would never change His mind. [18] So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. [19] This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. [20] Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
The whole world watched as Donald Trump and JD Vance took their oaths during the inauguration a couple of days ago. JD Vance placed his hand on the Bible, but it was noticeable that Donald Trump only stood next to the Bible and not with his hand thereon.
Whether that was significant only time will tell.
Life is strewn with broken promises, and shattered oaths. Lies litter our politics, our newsfeeds, our courts and society in general.
So many couples who have solemnly promised to be faithful to eachother break their promises at the drop of a hat - only to make the same superficial oaths with someone else.
Is it any wonder that people come sceptically to God's Word as if it's going to be just another broken promise.
Here, in Hebrews, we read that lying and breaking an oath is impossible for the Lord.
He is Pure Truth with no shadow of turning - what He says He means and He will do whatever He says.
So, approaching the Bible is so different from any other book. What is promised there is literally true.
Jesus fleshed out Truth in His Life, so that what was written could be seen and heard, touched and held.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us FULL of grace and truth.
When Jesus made His Proclamations:
I Am the Bread of Life, the Living Water, the Way, the Truth and the Life, the Resurrection and the Life
...these weren't empty words, they are literal truths.. we can trust Him, knowing it's impossible for Him to lie or break His Promises.
When Jesus said to the dying thief "today you will be with Me in Paradise" it was a promise he could rely on.
He didn't say to that man: "Don't bother Me, I'm in agony, dying for the sins of the world." No, even in that intense pain, He took the time to assure that unworthy guy that he could be saved and promised him a place in Heaven.
Jesus' promises are unbreakablly true, they are a rock and an anchor for each one of us.
Right now, today, you and I can draw close to Jesus and know we are eternally safe and eternally saved - all for the simplicity of believing and trusting.
Hallelujah!
