Psalm 36:9 AMPC
For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light do we see light.
Jeremiah 2:13 AMPC
For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the Fountain of living waters, and they have hewn for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns which cannot hold water.
The search for meaning, identity and belonging is a thirst in each soul. Where we go to quench that thirst is the burning question.
We see plainly in scripture that in God alone is the fountain of Life and, as Jesus told the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well:
John 4:14 AMPC
But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life.
And again at the Feast of Tabernacles:
John 7:38-39 AMPC
He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water. [39] But He was speaking here of the Spirit, Whom those who believed (trusted, had faith) in Him were afterward to receive. For the [Holy] Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honour).
The thirsty soul will be quenched at Jesus' feet.
All search for satisfaction through this world's broken cisterns will bring only temporary pleasure, ending in futility.
Reading the thoughts of a dying atheist, a dear friend of my nearest and dearest, only confirms this conclusion, here translated from Hebrew:
"The good years of my life are over and there is nothing to continue. A life whose whole meaning is distress and disconnection - not worth suffering and effort for!"
A life lived without Jesus ends in disconnection. Disconnection from this world and everything tangible that we have clung to as real.
But, connected to Jesus, our fountain of Life, leads to the well of eternal Life when this present journey concludes.
An old chorus says:
There is a river
That flows from God above
There is a river
That's filled with His great love
Come to the waters
There is a vast supply
There is a River
That never will run dry
Get plumbed in as fast as you can!
