Fountain

Psalm 36:9

For with you is the fountain of life;

in your light we see light.

When you drive into Beersheba, the city in the Negev desert, you will be greeted by many fountains.

The Mayor has taken it upon himself to place fountains at various venues around the city.

These fountains are lit up at night, making a sparkling focal point, adding an illusion of moisture to the dry desert climate.

Here in the verse above, we see that the Lord is the Fountain of Life in the midst of the wilderness of our human existence.

Without God, life will eventually become barren and aimless.

Indeed, many people are finding that, minus the trappings of social interaction, their fountains have run dry.

Perhaps it has taken this radical situation to see that we have been seeking life from broken cisterns.

Jeremiah 2:12-13

The heavens are shocked at such a thing and shrink back in horror and dismay. For my people have done two evil things: They have forsaken me, the Fountain of living waters; and they have built for themselves broken cisterns that can’t hold water!

Inevitably every earthly pleasure will dry up. What then? Is that it?

When Jesus encountered the woman at the well, who had experienced quite a bit of worldly excitement with many husbands and lovers, he quickly perceived that she was still unfulfilled. Moreover, she had become the pariah of the village of Sychar - forced to draw water at midday when no one was about. There she could avoid the scornful gaze of the other "more decent" women, who looked down on her!

He tells her that He has "water" to give which will quench that inner thirst.

John 4:10-14

He replied, “If you only knew what a wonderful gift God has for you, and who I am, you would ask me for some living water!”

“But you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this is a very deep well! Where would you get this living water? And besides, are you greater than our ancestor Jacob? How can you offer better water than this which he and his sons and cattle enjoyed?”

Jesus replied that people soon became thirsty again after drinking this water. “But the water I give them,” he said, “becomes a perpetual spring within them, watering them forever with eternal life.”

How wonderful it is to have Jesus' Living Water flowing in our lives. Its fountain springs up in our most desert areas, watering the dry ground of our hearts.

If you're feeling dry and uninspired, come sit with Jesus this morning at His well and let His fountain of Life wash over you - rinsing off the dust of depression and sadness.

If all seems dark and gloomy, look to Jesus, the Light of the World, in His Light - we see light.

It's time to drink deeply of the Water of Life that Jesus alone gives.
