Luke 7:36-38 NKJV
Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee's house, and sat down to eat. [37] And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, [38] and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.
I love this episode of Jesus' life.
He isn't embarrassed to let this woman intrude on this meal in the Pharisee's posh house.
We can only assume that this lady was notorious in the region, probably she had been a prostitute - someone people avoided and looked down on.
Yet here she gatecrashes the place to demonstrate extravagant love for the Saviour.
Alabaster oil was expensive, highly treasured, but she spared no expense to show her gratitude to Jesus.
We're not told explicitly, but perhaps it was the woman caught in adultery (John 8) who had been so cruelly brought before Jesus by the Pharisee's to be stoned?
Was she so overwhelmed by Jesus' forgiveness that she sought Him out to lavish her thanks towards Him?
Tears fell from her eyes and they washed Jesus' feet and she dried them with her long hair and massaged them with the precious oil.
It was quite a scene in the midst of an ornate meal!
How much am I prepared to show my love for Jesus in the most inappropriate way or place?
Am I so staggered at Jesus' love for me that it transcends everything else?
I need to examine my own heart in the light of this precious lady's love for Him.
