I didn't learn Latin at school, but I remember a sermon where this phrase was used, referring to God's creative power in forming the heavens and the earth.
It means: "out of nothing."
Hebrews 11:3 AMPCBy faith we understand that the worlds [during the successive ages] were framed (fashioned, put in order, and equipped for their intended purpose) by the word of God, so that what we see was not made out of things which are visible.
God made something out of nothing.
In fact, when we read the Creation account, we see that:
Genesis 1:1-2 AMPCIn the beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created the heavens and the earth. [2] The earth was without form and an empty waste, and darkness was upon the face of the very great deep. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.
What do I take out of this?
Well it's super encouraging!
When I feel empty and all seems wasted and dark.... the Holy Spirit can transform and create something out of the chaos and brokenness of my life.
If I could look up during my down times, I would see the Holy Spirit hovering over me, ready to transform situations, and, most importantly, me!
I've seen it happen so many times.
When it seemed all hope was gone, God stepped in and spoke His Word and things turned miraculously around.
So put this phrase "ex nihilo" into your vocabulary, because you will see Jesus do so many miracles for you too, as you look to Him for provision, protection and guidance..
I'm reminded of the old chorus:
"Something beautiful, something good
All my confusion He understood
All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife
But Jesus made something beautiful of my life"...
Oh yes, He did, He does and He will do!
Hallelujah!
