My eyes are dry
My faith is old
My heart is hard
My prayers are cold
And I know how I ought to be
Alive to You and dead to me
But what can be done
For an old heart like mine
Soften it up With oil and wine
The oil is You, Your Spirit of love
Please wash me anew
With the wine of Your Blood
I know well how hard it is to have physically dry eyes. It can be a problem even to just open the eyelids. Plus, without the body's inbuilt lubrication system functioning, all sorts of infections occur.
There's blurred vision, itchiness, and discomfort.
The only solution is to obtain replacement tears and keep good eye hygiene.
Dry spiritual eyes are an even worse condition.
Revelation 3:17 AMPC For you say, I am rich; I have prospered and grown wealthy, and I am in need of nothing; and you do not realize and understand that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
It's a very dangerous condition to feel in need of nothing.
Being uninspired and indifferent is a deadly situation for a Christian.
Reading the lyrics of Keith Green's song, I can identify with those sentiments, during many times in my life.
What's the solution:
Revelation 3:18 AMPC Therefore I counsel you to purchase from Me gold refined and tested by fire, that you may be [truly] wealthy, and white clothes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nudity from being seen, and salve to put on your eyes, that you may see.
In these last days of deception we need the Holy Spirit to lubricate our spiritual eyes that we may see God's Word clearly.
The only "gold" that lasts forever is our faith in Jesus:
1 Peter 1:7 AMPC So that [the genuineness] of your faith may be tested, [your faith] which is infinitely more precious than the perishable gold which is tested and purified by fire. [This proving of your faith is intended] to redound to [your] praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) is revealed.
Don't think that higher wages or more money will sort everything out. It won't.
Our clothing should be Jesus' robe of righteousness, not being obsessed with outward adornment:
Isaiah 61:10 AMPC I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Father God, please keep my spiritual eyes open and lubricated by the pure water of the Holy Spirit. Wash me anew in Jesus' blood so I'm not infected by the world. Keep me sharp in faith and love
