19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
35 Don't throw away your confidence for it brings a great reward.
Hebrews 10
We live in a throw away society.
Washing machines, computers, mobile phones, fridges all have limited lives.
When they break, we just throw them away and get new ones without much thought.
When Jesus told the parable of the sower He mentioned that some lost their faith when the troubles of this world got too much.
It made them throw away their faith.
18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”
Matthew 13
As long as things run smoothly, it's easy to stay close to Jesus, but when trials raise their ugly heads that's where the rubber hits the road.
The big temptation is to give up and turn back.
We have to guard against this mindset, because confidence in Christ has a great reward - not just in this life, but for all eternity.
Don't throw it all away!
