Psalm 37:4 AMPC Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.
The above verse could be misconstrued as an "Aladdin's lamp", or a magical formula for getting our own desires fulfilled.
There are so many conflicting desires vying for dominance in the human heart. They are like raised voices within, crying out: "follow me"!
Whichever is the loudest, strongest most persistent is the one we will normally follow.
There are desires for money and personal gain, desire for fame and power. So many desires that want to possess us and dominate us.
In the quiet of this early morning I ask what is the overriding desire of my heart?
Each of us can only examine our inner being in the light of God's Presence.
Really it is hard to know our own heart. One thing is certain, our fallen self is naturally opposed to God:
Galatians 5:17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
But our new nature desires to follow after Jesus.
Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can the dissenting voices of our old life be quieted.
It's a daily dedication which reaps great rewards:
Galatians 5:22-24 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
What does God's desire of us?
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8
Prayer
Father, may our hearts be united in the desire to follow Jesus and His Kingdom of love.
