Psalm 42:7
Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.
If you've ever stood beside a mighty waterfall, all other sounds are drowned out by the roaring thunder of the gushing torrents.
It stuns your soul into silence and wonder filled awe.
In both the old and New testaments the voice of the Lord is compared to such a sound:
Ezekiel 43:2 AMPC
And behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the east and His voice was like the sound of many waters, and the earth shone with His glory.
Revelation 14:2 AMPC
And I heard a voice from heaven like the sound of great waters and like the rumbling of mighty thunder; the voice I heard [seemed like the music] of harpists accompanying themselves on their harps.
So then, you may say, why can't I hear it?
The key is in the the Psalm we started with. You have to go deep.
There's nothing superficial about God. He searches the deep things in our hearts.
The depths of His heart calls out to the depths in ours.
This calls for dedication, devotion and time. If you paddle in shallows of the transitory, you won't hear it.
But still yourself before God's Word, give Him special space and you will hear the thunder of His Voice - comforting and strong - drowning out the drumbeat of fear and the agitating lies of the evil one.
These are the days when hearing that thunderous voice is vital, because there is an abundance of deception pounding on our consciousness to distract and ensnare us.
Jesus said time and time again "see that you're not deceived".
Matthew 24:4 - Watch out that no one deceives you,
Mark 13:5 - Watch out that no one deceives you,
Luke 21:8 - Watch out that you are not deceived
How can we do this?
By hearing the roaring voice from Heaven - stilling our soul and let that roar from heaven assure us that He is in control.
He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." Psalm 46:10
