Psalm 34:18 NIV
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Yesterday I heard of a sweet girl who had just been given up by her boyfriend. She was "in bits" - her heart was broken!
Think back, we've all been there, perhaps more than once. It's a pain we think will never go away - a rejection of our very self.
This sweet girl's mum is watching over her, with such compassion, worried that she might do something stupid. So she's staying extra close.
In our verse today, we see that the Lord has that sort of heart towards us, especially when our hearts are broken (for whatever reason).
Not only is He close, but He is the ONLY one who can mend our hearts:
Psalm 147:3 AMPC
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds [curing their pains and their sorrows].
It was the very mission of our Lord Jesus and He read this passage from Isaiah in the synagogue at Nazareth:
Luke chapter 4:18 from Isaiah 61
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
Read on in verse Luke 4:21 Jesus Himself proclaims that HE is the One who is fulfilling that prophecy.
[Recently, someone said to me that we Christians had made the Old Testament prophecies fit around Jesus! But here we see Jesus Himself owning the scripture.]
For the broken ones we meet, we who love Jesus, must point their gaze in His direction. He is the One who can come in and bring the healing and acceptance that they need.
Why should He care? What qualifies Him to understand?
He knows what it is to be rejected Isaiah 53:3
He was despised and rejected of men
John 1:11
He came to His own, and even they rejected Him
The old sixties song: "What becomes of the brokenhearted" echoes the cry of many a heart right now.
Let's end today with a prayer:
Father, today many hearts are broken and grieving. We thank You for the promise in Your Word that You are close to each and every one. In their brokenness bring the loving healing of Jesus by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Use me to reach out to those that I know.
Let it be so.
