Breathe
Genesis 2:7 AMPC
Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being.
How important is our breath.
Every asthma sufferer will know what it is to be gasping for breath. It is such a frightening experience and underlines the fragile thread which ties us to life.
COVID-19 causes problems with the lungs and ventilators have to be used to keep patients alive.
In the ordinary course of events we take our breathing for granted. It is only when there's an interruption do we realise what a gift our breath is.
How precious is the breath of God, it instigated creation itself:
Psalm 33:6 AMPC
By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all their host by the breath of His mouth.
And we see the resurrected Jesus breathing on the disciples to give them the "oxygen" of Heaven:
John 20:22 AMPC
And having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit!
How we need the unction of God's breath if we are to dwell at peace in this troubled world.
With the old hymn I pray:
Breathe on me, breath of God:
fill me with life anew,
that I may love as you have loved
and do as you would do
I'm a garlic lover and am aware my breath may be a bit pungent after eating it! People don't want to be too near me. My nephew is very particular about not eating anything garlicky if he's going to work the next day! Good lad!
May we, as lovers of Jesus, breathe out the breath of life to those we meet and mix with and not the foul smell of indifference and cold-heartedness.
This morning take time to let Jesus breathe on you and receive the fresh breath of the Holy Spirit!
And... don't forget to pass it on....
