Betrayal
Psalm 55:12-13
It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend.
There is nothing as savage as when someone close betrays and wounds.
It is devastating and mostly comes as a shock.
You can be left reeling asking: "What did I do to provoke such an attack?"
This Psalm also is a foreshadow of how Jesus was to be betrayed - not by an enemy but by a close friend, his own disciple. Moreover - by a kiss!
Many times they would have sat together and ate meals, laughed and told stories round a fire.
They would've shared ministry and miracles around Israel too.
Psalm 55:20-21
As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!
Anyone who says the Bible is outdated and irrelevant need only look at what has dominated the news this week.
Words spoken softly and smoothly can be as daggers plunging deep and causing deep cavernous rifts!
God save us from being such an agent of hurt.
Prayer
Psalm 141:3-4
Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies.
