All by myself

There is a song entitled "All by myself" that climbs onto the airwaves sung by various artists from time to time - here are some of the lyrics:

When I was young

I never needed anyone

And making love was just for fun

Those days are gone

Living alone

I think of all the friends I've known

When I dial the telephone

Nobody's home

All by myself

Don't wanna be

All by myself

Anymore

Hard to be sure

Sometimes I feel so insecure

And loves so distant and obscure

Remains the cure

Psalm 39:1-11

I said to myself, “I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.” But as I stood there in silence— not even speaking of good things— the turmoil within me grew worse. The more I thought about it, the hotter I got, igniting a fire of words: “LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered— how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.”

We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. Rescue me from my rebellion. Do not let fools mock me. I am silent before you; I won’t say a word, for my punishment is from you. But please stop striking me! I am exhausted by the blows from your hand. When you discipline us for our sins, you consume like a moth what is precious to us. Each of us is but a breath.

How helpless each of us are without God!

This Psalm puts us into perspective.

We look back over the years of our lives and, yes, it seems like a mere breath. Where did the time go?

Did I squander precious moments like someone feeding coins into a fruit machine for no return?

Recently, I spent time, with my nearest and dearest, looking back at an online photo album cataloguing the pioneers of his kibbutz - including his parents, newly arrived in "the Land" from Poland.

The dreams they cherished, so vibrant and alive, about building a new life, were plainly written on their smiling faces.

Now they are but memories on faded scanned images, still cherished by their offspring, but soon to be extinguished from living recollection as time goes by.

It's what we all come to .... without making the divine connection.

Psalm 39:12 AMPC

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not Your peace at my tears! For I am Your passing guest, a temporary resident, as all my fathers were.

Nothing can hold back our eventual demise from this life.

To view the current obsession with COVID-19, you'd think that, without it, we would all live forever!

No, some disease, some event, will bring down the curtain on our earthly existence.

Psalm 90:12

Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should.

Only by connecting with Jesus can we ensure our future in eternity.

Then we can look Death squarely in the face and say:

1 Corinthians 15:55 AMPC

O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?

Don't get caught offside at that point, Jesus wants to welcome you into His Kingdom.

Come as you are, with your doubts and fears. He is waiting with open arms to receive you into His Kingdom - one that will last forever. You don't have to face eternity "All by myself"!
