John 5:39-40 AMPC
You search and investigate and pore over the Scriptures diligently, because you suppose and trust that you have eternal life through them. And these [very Scriptures] testify about Me! [40] And still you are not willing [but refuse] to come to Me, so that you might have life.
When Jesus spoke these words, there was, as yet, no New Testament, but He declared that the very scriptures, that the religious leaders spent their whole lives studying, testified about Him.
Multiple times during Old Testament, the Lord had promised to send a Saviour, a King, a Messiah to bring about forgiveness of sin and redeem the world.
How come that those who studied it so diligently failed to recognise Jesus when He arrived?
We have to conclude that study alone will not connect us with the Lord.
Therefore Jesus didn't select theologians to be His closest disciples. He chose ordinary working class guys, with hungry hearts and needy souls. Some scarred deeply with the consciousness of their sin.
Luke 5:8 AMPC
But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
Those religious leaders who prided themselves in their knowledge and self righteousness were blinded by their own perceived superiority.
So, only approaching the scriptures with a heart hungry for Truth, will open the door to salvation and a living, breathing relationship with Jesus.
We are blessed to have the Old and New Testament to be able to feed on daily.
Let's come with hungry hearts to be fed on the Living Word - Our Precious Saviour Jesus Christ.
