Isaiah 55:10-11 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
Unless you are a freak of nature, you will have been suffering during this heatwave!
So, when I awoke early this morning, I was so glad to hear the rumble of thunder. For I knew that we would get a blessed downpour to water the parched garden and refresh the stiflingly humid atmosphere.
Even now, through the open window, I can smell the special fragrance that the rain brings.
And, after just a few minutes, the drooping leaves regain their vibrant greenness.
In this stunningly evocative chapter of Isaiah (if you have time, please read the whole of it) the Lord likens His Word to the rain.
For Israel this passage has an even greater impact because during many months of the year there is no rain. So when it comes it is always welcome (not so in Blighty if you're planning a summer picnic or bbq).
God's Word is not just dead letters on a crumpled page of the Bible, but it is alive and active.[Hebrews 4:12]
In John chapter 1, Jesus is called THE Word, always existing and the creative force for the cosmos. Therefore, when He came down from Heaven, He was the Living Water that our parched hearts had been craving.
Jesus told the woman at the well that He had the spiritual water that could quench her thirst. (See John 4).
She had been seeking identity and meaning via human relationships with the wrong kind of company. This made her life barren and she was ostracised by society.
Maybe you feel a little dry in your walk with Jesus or, perhaps you are yet to drink of that Living Water.
Hear the invite anew today:
“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” John 7:37-38
“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Isaiah 55:1
